The US Tsunami Warning System has issued a tsunami warning, following a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that hit the Solomon Islands, Indonesia’s West Java province, midday on Monday.
The prime minister of Solomon Islands, Manasseh Sogavare, has urged residents to move to higher ground, though the Meteorological Service had said there was no immediate tsunami threat to the region, but warned about unusual sea currents on the coast.
According to reports, a second earthquake measuring 6.0 struck nearby 30 minutes after the initial one of 7.0 magnitude, making it five earthquakes recorded within a 90-minute period in the region, leaving at least 162 people dead and leaving 700 hurt, mostly in the town of Cianjur.
