Trump vowed to nominate a woman by next week to fill Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s seat on the Supreme Court, opening a fierce political battle that could transform the nation’s highest court and alter the presidential election. At a Saturday rally night in Fayetteville, N.C., Trump told supporters that he a nominee, a very talented and very brilliant woman for the seat.” The crowd chanted “Fill that seat!”
He went further with a voice vote, touting his supporters to choose between a woman or man and the crowd went wild by shouting “a Woman” and he brashly accepted to nominate an outstanding woman.
According to the people familiar the matter, Trump spoke highly of Amy Coney Barrett, 48, of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit and Barbara Lagoa, 52, of the 11th Circuit — as his favorites. Two other judges — McConnell’s favorite, Amul Thapar, 51, of Kentucky and the 6th Circuit and 38-year-old Allison Jones Rushing of the 4th Circuit — are in a small group that is being given a close look.
All were nominated by Trump to their present positions and have wide support in the conservative legal establishment that has advised the president on his judicial picks.
The battle is about to start since this is vacant within an election year. It will not be an easy fight considering what happened with Justice Kavanaugh’s hearing. Although, since Republicans are in control of the senate, they might pull a brilliant trick.
