The United Kingdom has on Wednesday 2nd December 2020 become the first western nation to authorize the distribution of a Covid-19 vaccine. Matt Hancock, health secretary, announced on Wednesday morning that help was coming after the nation’s regulators granted it’s an emergency authorization.
The vaccine which rather than working as a normal vaccine that trains the Immune system to recognize disease-causing part of a virus, gives the Immune system a preview of what the virus looks like. This is because it contains mRNA that encodes viral protein to mimic the coronavirus.
The manufacturers, US pharmaceutical giants Pfizer and it’s German partner BioNTech had last month assured that its trail shows it was 95% effective in preventing the disease even in the older generation and showed no threatening safety concerns.
For a pandemic which took over 1.4 million lives worldwide, BioNTech CEO, Ugur Sahib, expressed his hope of positive outcome from the drug. He stated:
“We believe it is really the start of the end of the pandemic”
