Mr. Sowore Omoyele, publisher of Sahara Reporters, and four other activists were arrested on December 21, 2020, for planning a protest against the Government. This happened following his tweet which read:
“How about a CrossOver Protest/Uprising tonight? Is anyone willing to participate? Pick up a candle and a placard showing your grievances against the regime, let’s upload our short videos and photos across our Social Media platforms. Let’s welcome the regime to a RESOLUTE 2021!”
Mr. Sowore and others who were remanded on Monday by the Magistrate Court in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja were ‘rejected’ for over three hours by the Kuje correctional facility before they were eventually accepted.
Witnesses who followed Sowore and Co revealed that the rejection was due to unavailability of space in the facility.
These activists were kept outside the prison premises for nearly four hours while police officers made calls to their superiors and the interior ministry to intervene. The calls later brought about their acceptance at about 9 pm.
Sowore in his recent tweet said that he’s been left with a broken nose from the night of their arrest.
The charges were placed on Sowore and the other activists: criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, and attempting to instigate others, which they have all denied.
