Following the Federal Government plan to make it compulsory that all SIM cards in Nigeria are linked with the National Identification Number NIN, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project SERAP has called on the Federal Government to halt the process.
According to the body, the data being sought for already exists in several platforms like the BVN, driver’s license, international passport and voters card. The body urged the NIMC management to harmonize and integrate existing Identification database into the national identity database and use it to update Sim cards.
The body further stressed that the request for Nigerians to register for NIN is burdensome, unjustified and unnecessary. The body made it known that the process would expose the citizens to a high risk of contracting the Covid-19 virus.
In addition, it was made known that blocking Nigerians from using their Sim card would amount to a violation of the freedom of expression and access to information.
They however made it known that legal actions would be taken if the decision is not reversed in the space of seven days.
