SERAP Orders FG To Investigate Inappropriate Funds In The Health Sector

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project SERAP has called on the Federal Government, to investigate the misuse of unapproved funds in the health ministry, teaching hospitals, medical centres and NAFDAC.

According to the body, the Ministry of Health spent N13,910,000.00 to organize two-days training and discussion with Chief Medical Directors and other personnel to prepare the 2019 personnel budget, whereas N4,860,000.00 was earlier budgeted for the programme.

The body also said that The Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital Management Board Aro-Abeokuta, Ogun State, has also failed to account for the N28,662,265.32 that was meant to procure drugs, implants and other inputs as approved by the Federal Government.

The body however said that the Auditor General wants the money returned back to the treasury.

The letter sent yesterday, read in part: "SERAP also urges you to investigate the patterns of widespread corruption in the health ministry, teaching hospitals, medical centres, and NAFDAC, and to clean up an apparently entrenched system of corruption in the health sector.

These allegations are documented in Part 1 of the 2018 audited report released last week by the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation.
