The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project SERAP has called on the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, over the illegal detention of Omoyele Sowore and 4 other people.
The body had made it known that they are seeking the assistance of the foreign agency, in soliciting the immediate release and withdrawal of the bogus charges against Sowore and others, as their only offence was peacefully exercising their rights.
In a statement written to the foreign group by SERAP, they had demanded that the Working Group should request the Nigerian government withdraw bogus charges against Mr. Sowore and four other activists. According to SERAP, the detention of Sowore and the four other activists is a deprivation of their rights to freedom of expression, which is against the 1999 Nigerian Constitution.
SERAP also requested that the Working Group should request that the Nigerian government reward Sowore and the other activist with adequate compensation for their unlawful detention.
