Chilwell fouled the lively Livramento to give Southampton a penalty, Ward-Prowse scored from the spot to make it 1-1.
Ward-Prowse was sent off for a dangerous foul on Jorginho.
Timo Werner scored the second goal for Chelsea from a cross by Azpilicueta.
Ben Chilwell’s effort was adjudged to have cross the line and was correctly awarded to help Chelsea earn a 3-1 win over Southampton.
Chelsea sit two points clear on top of the log as Manchester City and Liverpool slug it out on Sunday.
