Onyewusi Ibidapo Obe, Former Vice-chancellor of UNILAG Dies At 71

Former vice-chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Professor Onyewusi Ibidapo has passed on to glory. This happened yesterday being Sunday, Jan 3, 2020.


The news came as a shock to the University of Lagos, which was like his second home. The death of the 71-year old Professor was confirmed by the Registrar and Secretary to the Council of First Technical University, Olayinka Balogun in one statement. “He was said to have died of Covid-19 complications, after receiving treatment before his death on Sunday“.

Born: July 5 1949.


College education: Ilesa Grammar School and Igbobi College (1962 – 1968).


University education: University of Lagos (1968 – 1971) – [B.Sc.(Hons)] degree in Mathematics, First Class Division.


Postgraduate education: University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada – Master of Mathematics degree in Applied Mathematics with a minor in computer science and PhD in Civil Engineering with specialization in Applied Mechanics/Systems.


Office of Vice-Chancellor: University of Lagos (2000 – 2007).


Appointments: Chairman of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities and Pioneer pro-chancellor and chairman of the Governing Council of the First Technical University, Ibadan.


Awards: Won award Best Vice-Chancellor twice (2004,2005).

Family: Happily married to Olusola Ibidapo-obe and blessed with 4 children.
