Okonjo Iweala To Emerge As WTO DG Following Biden’s Endorsement

Following the nomination of Nigerian Economist, and former Nigerian Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo Iweala and South Korean Trade Minister Yoo Myung-hee  for the position of the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Too Myung-hee has withdraw her bid to lead the World Trade Organization, leaving Okonjo-Iweala as the only remaining candidate for the job.

According to reports, the Korean Trade Ministry revealed a statement on Friday that, Yoo had discussions with the U.S. and other major nations, and took various issues into account “comprehensively” including the need to revitalize the multilateral organization.

Earlier reports had it that, former president of the United States Donald Trump was not in support of Iweala’s appointment and this had led to the suspension of the exercise by WTO.

However, the United States President Joe Biden is set to endorse Okonjo-Iweala after the Trump administration blocked her selection. Iweala who is also a U.S. citizen had emerged as the most qualified candidate for the post of the WTO director-general, but The United was the only country that opposed her.
