NIN: Don’t Block Subscribers Till 9th February — Buhari

Following a plea from subscribers, President Buhari gave an order yesterday that no one should be blocked from telecom operators’ networks till February 9, 2021, as against the January 19 deadline.

Millions of subscribers were still yet to complete the NIN process as at the January 19 deadline, and the continuous stress of the deadline by Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Ibrahim Pantami, Nigerians went into panic and pleading for an extension.

However, the federal government had yesterday, subsided the rising panic by suspending the blockage of lines of defaulters to February 09.

A statement released by the Association of Licensed Telecommunication Operators of Nigeria ALTON, and signed by Engr. Gbenga Adebayo and Publicity Secretary, Damian Udeh made this new date official. ALTON thereby enjoined all telecom subscribers who have NINs to link them to their SIM cards as soon as possible within this period of extension.

“ALTON can confirm to our members that we have received formal confirmation from the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC that President Muhammadu Buhari has graciously approved the extension of the deadline for subscribers with NIN to link it to their SIM registration data from 19th January to 9th February 2021″.

“We thank the President for giving us more time to deliver on this all-important assignment of creating a credible national identity database for the country. We are also grateful to the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ibrahim Ali Pantami, for his commitment to enabling digital economy,” the statement read.
