NGO, National Council of Women Societies (NCWS), in collaboration with Global Gold Consult, had last week awarded Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello the award of ‘The most gender-sensitive governor in Nigeria’, stating that the nomination is in recognition of the Governor’s effort to allocate sensitive and strategic positions to women in the governance structure of Kogi State.
An NCWS Statement read:
It is on record that the Governor is the only one amongst his colleagues with a female Aide de Camp (ADC) in Nigeria. The Secretary to the Government of the State and Head of Civil Service are women. He ensured that all the Vice-Chairmen and Council Leaders in each of the 21 Local Government Areas are women. There is a minimum of three women as Councilors in each of the Local Government Areas.
However, Senator Dino Melaye has countered this decision stating that Governor Nyesom Woke of Rivers State is a better nominee for the award, as women have more places in his administration than that of Bello. His statement read:
“I can see that the Leadership of the National Council of Women Societies (NCWS) does not know that the Deputy Governor of Rivers state is a woman”.
“If there’s any Governor who deserves the Gender-inclusive award, it’s Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers. In fact, the most Gender friendly Governors are the PDP Governors with special focus on the South. Please go and check their cabinets and the LGA Leadership of their states. Also, check their States Assembly and their NASS Representatives. There are women everywhere.”
