Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick against Bolivia on Thursday to lead the Albiceleste to a 3-0 win.
The former Barcelona star has now added another record to his name by breaking Pele’s record.
Before now, Pele held the record for the most goals in South American football with 77 goals.
Messi’s hat-trick has seen him overtake the legend and now set his own record with 79 goals.
“I’ve waited a long time for this,” an emotional Messi said afterwards.
“Now I’m going to enjoy it, it’s a unique moment after waiting so long. I am very happy,” he added.
Messi led Argentina to their first Copa America title since 1993 in July playing a pivotal role.
