Lionel Messi ended his year-long wait for an international trophy when he guided Argentina to a 1-0 win over arch-rivals, Brazil in the final on Sunday.
Messi played a vital role in the competition winning the Player of the tournament, the highest goal scorer with four goals to banish the heartache of near misses.
He has now dedicated the trophy to his family, Argentines and the late Diego Maradona.
“I want to dedicate this success to my family, who have always given me the strength to continue, to my friends whom I love so much, to all the people who support us and above all to 45 million Argentinians who have suffered so with this dreadful virus,” Barcelona megastar Messi wrote on Instagram.
“Use this happiness to gather strength to fight this virus together.”
Messi will now focus on his club future after his contract at Barcelona ran out in June.
