Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has since admitted a January move may not happen due to the emergence of Trevoh Chalobah this season.
Instead, reports AS, a new Premier League option could arrive in the form of United.
United have made tentative enquiries after Kounde, with the approach being motivated by the fitness of Raphael Varane.
The former Real Madrid defender has struggled with injury since his August arrival.
