It has been reported that a petitioner’s lawyer, Mr Kayode Adebisi, and lawyer for the police, Mr Francis Osie, clashed at the Friday hearing of the Osun State EndSARS judicial panel, investigating cases of Police brutality.
According to reports, Adebisi appeared before the panel on behalf of his client, Paul Adeolu, a businessman, who accused the Police of freeing gang members that defrauded him of N36m.
The businessman revealed in his petition to the panel that the police also detained and tortured him over the issue. The Police officer, who was in charge of the businessman’s case, Muritala Alayande, appeared before the panel to defend the allegation of police compromise levelled by the businessman.
It was however, reported that during cross-examination, the businessman’s lawyer, Adebisi, confronted the policeman, Alayande, that he tortured the businessman. The policeman replied that if he had beaten Adebisi’s client, the man “would have been unconscious for three days.”
The policeman’s response pissed off the petitioner’s lawyer and Adebisi complained to the panel, a move that did not go down well with the police lawyer, Osei, who accused the petitioner’s counsel of misleading the panel.
Meanwhile, the chairman of the panel, Justice Akin Oladimeji (retd.), Instructed the the police counsel to stop using words that would make the matter messy. This has led to the adjournment of the case till March 26, 2021.
