Yesterday 15th October, Anambra youths joined the ongoing protest, calling for an end to police brutality.
The protesters came out in their large numbers on the streets of Awka the state capital, marching from Aroma junction to the Government House and blocking the expressway with tyres.
The Anambra youths also demanded the prosecution of a former commander of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in the state, CSP James Nwafor.
CSP Nwafor has been accused of killing several youths and extorting from the citizens.
The protesters went to the Government House and demanded to see Governor Willie Obiano to present their demands and the names of those who have been killed from police brutality.
Meanwhile, the Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano has affirmed the sack of a former commander of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in the state, CSP James Nwafor.
Governor Obiano revealed this on Thursday via his Twitter page, following the protest of youths in the state seeking the prosecution of Mr. Nwafor.
According to him, “James Nwafor, former OC SARS in Anambra State is sacked and will be prosecuted”.
He also disclosed that a panel has been set up to investigate police brutality and extra-judicial killings in the state.
“Following my meeting with amazing #EndSARS protesters in Anambra, earlier today, we’ve setup up a Panel of Inquiry over Reports of Abuse of Human Rights, as communicated in the attached images”, he said.
He also said the panel will look, in particular, into allegations of extrajudicial killings by a former head of the SARS Office in Anambra, Chief Superintendent of Police James Nwafor (retired), whose appointment as a Special Assistant to the Governor has since been terminated.
“James Nwafor will face prosecution if found guilty of any of the alleged offences“, he further explained.
He as well promised the youths of a better standard of life with help from the federal government.
