The Ekiti State Government has reportedly apprehended nine school children who were found running errands and trading during school hours at the Okesa and Bisi markets in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.
Alhaja Maryam Ogunlade, the state Commissioner for Women Affairs, has described keeping children in markets during school hours as a gross violation of their rights and that it was contrary to the laws of Ekiti State, adding that the parents and guardians of the arrested children would be prosecuted.
This was revealed in a statement by the ministry, titled, ‘Ekiti apprehends nine children for loitering during school hours on Wednesday.
In the statement, the commissioner said, “Making the children run errands and keeping them in markets while they should be in school is contrary to the law of the land”.
Ogunlade made sure the parents and guardians of the arrested children signed an undertaking, that the children would attend school henceforth before releasing them on Tuesday.
