Alhaji Isah Jankara, Controller, Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), Niger State, has expressed the department’s disapproval with the current sale of large quantities of petrol by marketers in jerry cans.
The Controller emphasised on the risks and dangers aligned with such practices while speaking to the press in the state’s capital.
He labelled such practices as illegal as it entailed smuggling huge amounts of petrol to unknown destinations in jerry cans.
“The report reaching us reveals that some marketers of petroleum products in the state are selling large quantity of PMS in jerry cans.
“It is not permitted by law to sell such product in jerry cans because of the high inflammable nature of fuel.
“It is hazardous to transport fuel or store it in jerry cans,” Jankara said.
Jankara explained that a permit must be released by the DPR to a marketer before he/she could sell petrol.
He said that investigations were ongoing and guilty parties would be dealt with in accordance to the law.
Jankara further guaranteed the public that the FG would continue to make petrol available for consumers therefore it was unnecessary to hoard petrol.
