Customs Lament Over Villagers in Border Towns Serving as Informants for Smugglers

Comptroller Albashir Hamisu of the Nigerian Customs Services (NCS), Federal Operation Unit, Zone ‘B’ has lamented over information leaks by villagers of border towns to smugglers.

He accused the villagers of leaking information on the customs patrol team movement along the borders to smugglers into the country which aided them in avoiding arrest.

Albashir warned that smugglers should not be cooperated with as they bring in contrabands like drugs and weapons into the country and asked for the full collaboration of the villagers so as to flush out these nuisance to the country.

He also exposed that a total sum of ₦51.4 million worth of goods have been seized by his zone within two weeks.

“In total, we made 39 seizures in two weeks from March 22- 8 April 2021 with the total paid value of N51,449,779.58 across Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, Kebbi, Zamfara, Sokoto and the Kwara States.

“We are urging on the smugglers to desist from bringing such contraband goods into the country,” Albashir stated.

Amongst the seized items as given by the officer include, 801 bags of foreign parboiled rice, 81 kegs of foreign vegetable oil in 25 litres, 180 cartons of foreign spaghetti and 74 cartoons of foreign GIV and Eva soap.
