Following agitations to declare bandits as terrorists, the Northern socio-political organisation, Arewa Consultative Forum, has reportedly commended the declaration of bandits as terrorists, saying it is long overdue.
This is coming after the Federal High Court in Abuja presided over by Justice Taiwo Taiwo declared bandits as terrorists on Friday.
However, popular Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, reportedly kicked against the court order, stating that the declaration won’t change anything.
Gumi had reportedly stated that, “I think the Federal Government has succumbed to media blackmail by a section of the country. It will not have any practical value because even before the declaration they are being fought and treated as terrorists.”
Gumi added that, “So, it’s just a nomenclature which I believe will not change the dynamics on ground. If you can remember, IPOB was also declared a terrorist organization; the declaration was even backed by the order of the Court but as you can see even the international community did not recognise FG’s declaration of IPOB. So it has failed to be effective or to achieve the desired results.”
In response to this, the Arewa Consultative Forum showed their support for the call to declare bandits as terrorists.
According to Emmanuel Yawe, ACF spokesperson, “The designation of bandits as terrorists is long overdue. How else do you designate a group that has been terrorising citizens for many years now?”
