Following the rejection of e-transmission of electoral results by the National Assembly, it has been reported that the former Governor of Ekiti State Ayodele Fayose has wondered why the National Assembly members were afraid of electronic transmission of election results when the Independent National Electoral Commission said it had the capacity to do it.
Disclosing this in a statement on Saturday, be stated that, “If INEC is saying that it has the capacity to transmit results electronically anywhere in Nigeria, what then is the National Assembly afraid of? Why is the National Assembly presenting itself before Nigerians as a cog in the wheel of free, fair and credible elections in Nigeria?”
He added: “Most importantly if the Point of Sale machine is being used for financial transactions everywhere in the country, why can’t we also have an electoral process in which voters will be accredited strictly with card readers and results will be transmitted electronically from the polling units?”
The former Governor made it known: “The National Assembly members should not allow their personal interest to drag the country’s democracy into a hitch because if care is not taken, we will be having many court cases on our hands concerning the Electoral Act, thereby putting the 2023 general elections in jeopardy.”
He restated that, “The National Assembly should also avoid playing into the hands of the President, bearing in mind that the same President refused to sign amendments to the Electoral Act in the past.”
